Dr. Alfa Muhihi serves as Clinical Trials Manager at Africa Academy for Public Health (AAPH). He has extensive knowledge and experience regarding implementation and management of randomized clinical trials. He first joined AAPH in 2012 as Clinical trial and regulatory affairs coordinator. He has coordinated several research projects implemented by AAPH in collaboration with Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), Management and Development for Health (MDH), Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, including Neonatal Vitamin A Supplementation Trial (NEOVITA), Alliance for Maternal and Newborn Health Initiative (AMANHI), Saving Brains, and two trials of Vitamin D supplementation among HIV infected patients in Dar es Salaam. Until recently, Dr. Muhihi was a study coordinator providing technical oversight for a randomized trial of calcium supplementation among pregnant women to assess the effect of a lower calcium dose for prevention of preeclampsia and preterm births. Currently, he is leading another collaborative research study between AAPH, MUHAS, IHI, George Washington University, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Columbia University to evaluate the effect of different iron doses in Multiple Micronutrient Supplements on anemia during the third trimester of pregnancy. Dr. Muhihi is passionate about improving the health of Tanzanians through evidence-based public health interventions. He holds a Medical Doctor degree (MD) from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (2008), and a Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (2011). He has also received several awards including the McGoldrick Fellowship in Biostatistics in HIV/AIDS (2009), Global Infectious Disease (GID) award (2010), Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars (FIRCS) award (2011), and The Bernard Lown Scholars in Cardiovascular Health (2018) Dr. Muhihi has contributed extensively to the scientific community through peer reviewed publications.
