Who we are

Officially established in 2009, the Africa Academy for Public Health (AAPH) is an independent organization registered in Tanzania with the mission to address public health priority challenges in sub-Saharan Africa through innovative scientific evidence, training & capacity building and knowledge translation.

AAPH evolved from research collaborations between the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and a number of public health research and training institutions in Tanzania. This relationship began more than 40 years ago and developed stronger ties over the last 20 years through large joint discovery and translation research and training programs.

We aim to contribute to the development of public health professionals who are equipped to address identified gaps in delivery of health systems and health services research. The AAPH provides a platform for north-south and south-south learning to develop collaborative and sustainable research and programs, with the aim of benefiting population health, particularly in the sub-Saharan region.

AAPH also aims to facilitate health research by establishing and strengthening links between institutions in the North, including the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and African research institutions; exchanging information on research ideas, knowledge, projects, and capacity; and harnessing synergies across different research teams working in sub-Saharan Africa. The AAPH supports the advancement of training to fill identified gaps in public health.

Objectives

To provide high quality research and leadership training for various health professionals in sub-Saharan Africa.

To conduct implementation science research that will generate evidence for policy change around key public health priority issues in sub-Saharan Africa including reproductive and maternal health; child and adolescent health; nutrition and agriculture; HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria; non-communicable diseases; health systems strengthening, and more.

To facilitate translation of scientific evidence into practice.

To strengthen networks and linkages for scientific training and research initiatives within higher learning, research, and health institutions in sub-Saharan Africa.

Partnerships and collaborations are of a strategic nature, for the purpose of complementing and strengthening our work. The focus of such engagements is to support our mission as described above.

AAPH is a learning organization. We proactively seek out global and local best practices and apply these in our work. We strive to be innovative in our approach and interventions. We utilize proven strategies in executing our strategy, and are interested in experimenting with new strategies that offer the potential to add greater value to our work. Our priority is to design innovative cost-effective interventions to address the major public health challenges of Sub Saharan Africa.
