Being is an international mental health initiative hosted by Grand Challenges Canada (GCC). This initiative is dedicated to researching and addressing context-specific needs, engaging stakeholders, and fostering broader ecosystem building efforts. In collaboration with University of Ghana School of Public Health (UGSPH), AAPH is implementing the Being Initiative in Tanzania and Ghana.
On July 06, 2023 AAPH hosted a Young People's Mental Health Stakeholders' Engagement Workshop in Dar es Salaam - Tanzania. The workshop was officiated by Dr. Erasmus Mdeme, Head of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Department, Ministry of Health, and served as a platform to identify gaps and prioritize areas pertaining to the mental health of young people in Tanzania, recognizing the utmost importance of their well-being.
Bringing together a diverse range of stakeholders, including government representatives from the Ministry of Health, healthcare professionals and educators from Muhimbili National Hospital, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, National Institute of Mental Health, representatives from local NGOs, international organizations including representatives from Grand Challenges Canada, entrepreneurs, innovators, and adolescent and young people representatives, this workshop availed an avenue for collaboration and exchange of collective expertise.
Our shared goal was to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current state of young people's mental health in Tanzania. Specifically, we aimed at identifying existing gaps in mental health services, explore barriers to access, and highlight priority areas for intervention. Our unwavering commitment is to develop sustainable strategies that address the unique mental health needs among Tanzanian young people.
Through the Being Initiative, AAPH in partnership with Grand Challenges Canada and other stakeholders, is determined to drive positive change in the mental health landscape, ensuring the well-being of Tanzania's youth. Together, we can make a lasting impact and foster a healthier and brighter future for our young population.
